Many people in the cannabis community are not happy with the process through which cannabis is going to be legalized. Most of the discontented lot belongs to the monetary (production and distribution) front of the business and they are not happy with the demolishing of the cannabis black market. However, people on the consumer side of the market don’t have any yearning to score an overpriced stuff with all the anxiety of getting caught or arrested in the prohibited environment.
Paradox of Marijuana Legalization

With legalization of adult-use marijuana and with no exceptions for criminal prosecution, the medical marijuana programs are getting reduced in their sizes. There is another problem: the standards set by many states to enter legalized business are very difficult to meet for many businesses that are already operating in the marijuana economy. But, it is a well-known fact that things often become difficult when governments and administrations get involved with any activity, especially an economical one.
Many people have a misconception that legalization only means that the cannabis business will operate as usual minus the law enforcers. If things go without law enforcement agencies in the picture then everything will be changed. Without any restriction, the capitalist guys will capture the market with the flooding of cannabis products. This will end the scope for small scale marijuana growers in no time.
Undesired Consequences of No-limit Legalization
Prices have already scaled down drastically in the states where limited and restricted adult-use cannabis is allowed. Now imagine how things would go if there is no growth and possession limits are established. Growers would grow as much as they want and buyers would reciprocate. Likewise, with no restrictions and limitations, medical marijuana programs will automatically die out.

And there is another possible scenario associated with the condition of no-limit legalization, the cross-state authority of police. If a state legalizes marijuana with no limits, there will be an irrepressible flow of cannabis from legal state to other part of the country and in that case it is very obvious that the federal laws will come into action to address this “illegal” proliferation of drugs in the country.
All the detractors of the restricted and limited cannabis legalization process must know that barring couple of flaws, it is the right way to proceed with legalization. There are few measures that can improve the process of legalization.
- Issue small business permits for people who are individually growing and dealing
- Make it easy for ex-cons to enter the business that will also help in winning the drug war
Even with all its flaws, no one can prefer prohibition over legalization, except if they are churning hefty profits from the illegalized business.
