Medical Marijuana Might Get Legalized in Peru this Year

September 20,2017 Peru

A first step has been taken to legalize cannabis in Peru. A bill will be presented before the parliament that would permit the production and import of medical marijuana in the country.

As per reports, a temporary medical marijuana lab set up by mothers to treat their sick children was raided by law-enforcement agencies in February this year. The public reacted strongly against the raid and pushed the demand to legalize medical marijuana. The government yielded to the public outcry, and earlier this week, the Peruvian Congressional Committee on National Defense approved to go ahead with the legislation. Now the bill to legalize medical marijuana will go before the Peruvian Congress.

The bill is not going to get approved immediately and will be debated by legislators. However, the momentum built after the police raid strongly indicates that the bill will soon become a part of the legislation.

President of Peru, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, was the first one to initially propose this legislation, after details of the police raid unraveled.

Alberto de Belaunde, a Peruvian Congressman, told reporters that the proposal would benefit patients suffering from cancer, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and other medical conditions.

According to the Congressman, cannabis oil would be legalized for medical purposes. No official text of the bill has been released yet so it’s unclear whether smoking cannabis will be allowed or not.

Founder of Seeking Hope, a Peruvian social welfare group that campaigns for the legalization of medical cannabis, Ana Alvarez, shared her thoughts about this recent development, “We feel that all the mothers of the group are very happy because it is a reward for so much struggle that we have been going through day by day.”

According to a poll from global market and opinion research specialist, IPSOS, 65% of Peruvians support the legalization of medical marijuana and 13% favor the legalization of adult-use cannabis.
