Lesotho, a kingdom in South Africa, is finally on board with the growth of medical marijuana. It has offered cannabis growing licenses to one of the medical companies. With the prolific outcome since, it is fair to say that marijuana is as popular in Africa as it is in any marijuana-legal state in the US. Now the question that arises is if other African countries will be interested in joining Lesotho in legalizing recreational or medicinal cannabis.
Maybe the trends in Lesotho will have an answer. This place made history a few weeks ago. It was the first ever African country to grant a cannabis-growing license. The Ministry of Health of Lesotho granted official permission to the pharmaceutical company. “Verve Dynamics”. It has been a common concern that the cannabis grown in this facility will not be available for recreational use.
However, it is still a huge step to even allow the scientific and medicinal use of the drug in the first place. This step is quite likely to bring a prolific future for the rest of the African countries as well. It was already expected that Lesotho will be one introducing the cannabis industry to Africa.
This was because this country has been a key source for marijuana for the past decade. In fact, seventy percent of the total marijuana produced in South Africa in the last 2,000 years has come from Lesotho. Most farmers grew it because of the massive influx of money it brought from the black market.
Laymen and experts all have their eyes set on the next country which is likely to step into the cannabis industry. According to many experts, Ghana can be the one to follow in the footsteps of Lesotho. This is not just another assumption. It is, as experts say, a calculated supposition.
Professor Alex Dodoo from Ghana’s Standard Authority addressed the potential of cannabis and brought it to the knowledge of the country. He said that the plant is beneficial both as a cash crop and a medical drug. While addressing the pros and cons of the legalization of marijuana, Professor Alex gave the example of Canada and how the medical marijuana program has flourished in that country.
He also said that Ghana has all the capabilities of setting precedence for policy regarding MMJ in Africa. In 2016, this country was ranked third in global cannabis consumption. This has led experts to believing that a properly regulated cannabis industry in African countries could potentially create thousands of jobs across the continent. This industry is also likely to bring in a revenue of a staggering 80 million dollars per year. This massive influx of money can alone be reason enough to regulate the cannabis industry in this continent.
As for Lesotho, it has already taken the initial and most crucial step. It will only be a matter of time before other African countries will follow suit. Hopes are high with Ghana being the next in line to regulate cannabis.
