That’s right. Research is emerging showing that CBD may help cocaine and alcohol addicts stay clean. Just like with any habit, the cycle can seem impossible to break. If something makes it easier for them to say “no”, and not slip back in, we need to know about it! Marijuana is often looked at as a “gateway” drug, which leads people to use more serious substances. However, the research is showing that the non-psychoactive components of cannabis (hemp) may have the opposite effect.
This article explains the incredible impact of CBD on rats that were addicted to either alcohol or cocaine. A gel was placed on their skin, and caused a reduction in relapse caused by stress. Five months later the effects were still visible. Friedbert Weiss at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, who led the research project said,
“The results provide proof of principle supporting the potential of CBD in relapse prevention along two dimensions: beneficial actions across several vulnerability states, and long-lasting effects with only brief treatment. Drug addicts enter relapse vulnerability states for multiple reasons. Therefore, effects such as these observed with CBD that concurrently ameliorate several of these are likely to be more effective in preventing relapse than treatments targeting only a single state.”
A separate article from the Miami Herald explains that the goal of this study was to see whether CBD treatments would reduce how much alcohol/cocaine the rats wanted to consume – and whether it would help them fight the urge to consume those products while under stress. The results showed that not only were the rats less anxious when put in anxiety-inducing situations meant to push them to consume more of their desired substance.
The CBD was completely cleared from the rat’s plasma and brains within three days after the last dose – but the one-week treatment provided results for up to five months!
