Signs You Need a New Grinder

You know the saying “all good things must come to an end?” This saying definitely applies to your varied smoking utensils, and most certainly your grinder. So, how do you know when it’s time to get a new one?

Does it Still Grind Your Herb?

The most important question is, is your grinder still doing its job? Is it still, you know, grinding? Do you have to sit there and work at it for five minutes sometimes? If so, this is a sign that you need a new grinder. The teeth are probably worn to shit, and I’m willing to bet that it needs to be cleaned. You probably need to replace your screen too. Try cleaning it and replacing the screen first. It might be okay, or it might be time for you to part with your dear friend.

How Often Do I Need to Get a New Grinder?

There is no hard and fast rule regarding when you need to get a new grinder. It’s really just whenever it starts to wear itself out. You will usually be able to tell when your grinder is on its last legs. By then you should be able to say you know your grinder fairly intimately. I’ve found that every grinder I’ve had tends to last three years, give or take. Any longer than that, and you are not getting all you can from your grinder.

How Dull are the Teeth?

First thing you should be aware of when considering whether or not you need a new grinder is how dull the teeth are. This is generally one of the first things to wear out on a grinder, after the screen in your kief catcher of course. If you got a low quality, or god forbid, a plastic grinder, you can expect those teeth to break off almost as soon as you use it for the first time. Well, I’m kidding, but you can expect that thing to last one month, tops. You can figure out how dull the teeth are by simply looking at them, and perhaps running your fingers along the edge. A good sharp tooth should feel sharp to the touch.

Does it Just Need to be Cleaned?

Grinders are utensils that need to be cleaned fairly often, especially when you consider what their given task is. Always take care to clean your grinder on the regular. This means cleaning out your kief catching chamber on at least a semi regular basis. What I usually like to do is throw the screen in a glass pyrex bowl with a small amount of rubbing alcohol, just enough to cover the screen. Then you should take a toothbrush and scrub off any kief that remains. The stickier the bud, the more often you will have to clean the screen, if you get my drift?
