Cannabinoids An Effective Treatment For Glioblastoma?

Cannabinoids An Effective Treatment For Glioblastoma? Glioglastoma has been at the forefront of the conversation ever since the news about Senator John McCain arose. Full spectrum cannabinoids and terpenes from That's Natural at www.cbdoil.life

Glioglastoma has been at the forefront of the conversation ever since the news about Senator John McCain arose. The Arizona Republican was diagnosed with a glioblastoma, which only 5.5% of people survive more than 5 years with. Roughly 3 of every 100,000 are diagnosed with this condition – often known as the most aggressive form of cancer.

According to a study by the National Cancer Institute, studies performed on mice and rats show that cannabinoids may fight cancer in many ways. Some of these include inhibiting tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking the growth of cancerous cells, and blocking blood vessel growth that tumors need to grow. Additionally, this study shows that cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells, while leaving normal cells alone. The study then goes on to say that when CBD is used alongside chemotherapy, it will often make chemotherapy more effective because of it’s ability to kill cancer cells without harming normal cells.

GWPharmaceuticals also published a study in February 2017 that shows benefits specifically with glioblastoma. This study showed that patients with documented recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) had a 30% higher one year survival rate than the placebo group when treated with a combination of cannabinoids – including CBD. The placebo group median survival rate was 369 days, while those treated with cannabinoids averaged 550 days.

Professor Susan Short, PhD, Professor of Clinical Oncology and Neruo-Oncology at Leeds Institute of Cancer and Pathology at St James University Hospital and principal investigator of the study had much more to add. She explained that the findings from this study suggest that the combination of cannabinoids to patients on dose-intensive temozolomide produced significant improvements in survival rates when compared with the placebo. She commented that the cannabinoids were generally well tolerated and said the results were promising. Additionally, she explained that the use of cannabinoids appears to be distinct from current medications used to treat oncology and offer a unique and synergistic treatment for future glioma treatments.
