Michigan has had a difficult relationship with medical cannabis. Legislation has suffered a lot of setbacks. In fact, the dispensary system was completely disbanded in 2016, only to be reinstated later in the year.
Nonetheless, a few dispensaries, or “provisioning centers,” exist within Michigan to provide patients and caregivers what they need. Only concentrates are sold in this state as the flower form of marijuana (known in Michigan law as “marihuana”) is not allowed within the state.
Despite all of the difficulties and hurdles, it is possible to open a provisioning center that can deliver medical marijuana products to patients in the state of Michigan. Be sure to know all the details to make sure you do it correctly and legally. Once you open a dispensary legally (which will be possible in the near future), you can set up a delivery plan to get your patients the medical marijuana products they need.
When was cannabis made legal
Michigan and marijuana have a strange history and relationship with one another. The strangeness continues with Michigan law’s stubborn use of “marihuana,” setting it apart from other states.
There used to be a system in place for medical marijuana dispensaries, but a court ruling in 2016 caused that to fall apart. Luckily just a few months later, in September of 2016, Governor Snyder put together a new system so medical patients can get the care they need.
While the details of this new system are being worked out, patients and caregivers are able to do what they could before while they are in limbo. In other words, patients and caregivers are allowed to continue growing medical marijuana for themselves (or for their patients) and deliver it to their patients. Caregivers may not have more than 5 patients at a time.
The new law will involve topical and concentrated forms of marijuana. At the moment, this is the only delivery available, but presumably, dispensaries will be allowed to deliver medical marijuana to their patients once the details of the law are finalized.
Recreational marijuana for adults is not looking good in terms of being legalized anytime soon, especially since the time for petition signature collection was reduced by the new legislature. There were therefore not enough signatures to put it on the ballot in November of 2016.
How many marijuana businesses are there currently in the state
Medical marijuana dispensaries, known in Michigan as “provisioning centers,” are not yet in operation within Michigan while it establishes its new system. Businesses could apply until September 15, 2017, meaning the approval process will soon begin.
How much money is there in the Michigan dispensary market
The medical marijuana market will likely be big in Michigan. By the year 2021, revenue is projected to get to $626,600,000 for that year. After the legalization of recreational marijuana (if it were to occur anytime soon), we could be seeing $939,100,000 or more in sales by the year 2021.
Marijuana Business Owner requirements
City council approval is required before an application is even allowed to be submitted. Be sure to be in touch with the officials in your city, since being on good terms with them will be an asset. City officials can prove extremely useful in terms of getting the resources you need to learn how to meet all of the requirements. You should also find out if your dispensary will be allowed to deliver the marijuana products to registered patients.
Applicants should be able to prove their industry knowledge before they submit their applications. Reach out to find a consultant who can ensure you are prepared to do this.
If an applicant is prepared enough to make it through the first stage of licensure, they will then need to submit a business plan and financial capital proof to the state. The financial capital needs to be sufficient to cover the business for two years at least. It is best if the applicant has business experience already.
License requirements
Location is everything for a potential marijuana entrepreneur in the state of Michigan. Each city is responsible for its own decisions regarding how many medical marijuana facilities will be allowed in their territory. Some cities may opt not to have any at all, and others will only allow dispensaries in particular locations. These decisions and plans are mostly still in the process of being formed, so potential applicants should keep up-to-date with local news and developments.
Applicants will also have to explain their plan for tracking inventory and products. This includes testing procedures for that product, plus packaging procedures. In other words, have everything planned out before submitting your application. If you are planning on delivering from your dispensary as well, you should include that in your plan as well.
Available License Types
Four licenses exist in the state of Michigan regarding “marihuana:”
- Marijuana grower’s license
- Marijuana processor’s license
- Marijuana secure transporter’s license
- Marijuana provisioning center’s license (dispensary)
How much does a Michigan marijuana delivery service make?
Marijuana dispensaries and delivery services generally bring anywhere from $50,000 a year up to millions. Although Michigan dispensaries will have fewer options than other states, there is still plenty of room for profit.
Timeframe
The time frame varies greatly on how long it takes to get a cannabis business up and running, but a year or more is generally a good rule of thumb. You will need that time to get finances in order, acquire necessary licenses, get suppliers and employees lined up.
