How to start a commercial grow operation in North Dakota

North Dakota is new to medical marijuana legislation, meaning there are opportunities for those that want to open a marijuana business in this state. Authorized marijuana growing operations (Compassion Centers) will be monitored by the Department of Public Health. Currently, there are no operating cannabis businesses in the area. There are also plans for a vote on the legalization of recreational cannabis within the year 2018.

This legislation was only recently passed, so there are no details on the licensure of new medical cannabis growing operations yet. However, there is some info about the fees associated with starting a North Dakota marijuana growing operation.

When was cannabis made legal

North Dakota licensed medical marijuana in 2017 and are in the process of setting up the program.

There currently are no marijuana businesses in North Dakota, but that will soon change as businesses are licensed and begin to open.

As the medical cannabis program is still in its beginning stages, predicting its success is not easy. Some analysts expect nearly 2,000 patients to register for the program by the end of 2019. Also, more than 950 caregivers and as many as 300 compassion centers are expected to enter the licensing race. Projected medical sales for 2021 are expected to reach $25,700,000

License requirements

The state’s medical cannabis program is regulated and controlled by the Department of Public Health.

Compassion center licenses will be granted according to a merit-based application methodology, which may take into consideration the standard of the planned location. It’ll examine the applicant’s character and knowledge in specific fields and also the planned centers’ plans. The arrangement includes record-keeping, safety, and security, staffing and training, preventing diversion, and pesticide-free cultivation; whether or not or not the person has enough capital; and its ability to make medication affordable for all patients.

The North Dakota Department of Health submitted a proposal earlier to roll out the rules. Once it’s approved by the department, they’ll be open to having an application from the middle of August until the end of September and even past that.

Only registered Compassion Centers are authorized to possess and grow cannabis plants on their premises. However, even they are not allowed to grow more than 1,000 plants at any given time and may not keep more than 3,500 ounces of usable marijuana, regardless of whether it is growing or dried, cured, and stored.

Compassion Centers (and their growing operations) are also required to maintain a not-for-profit status in order to be operational. The state of North Dakota still has not shared a lot of information about the application process, mainly because legalization is not complete.
