Yes, it’s flu season. People are getting sick all the time! Can CBD help curb nausea and vomiting? Research from the National Institutes of Health says it might be an effective treatment method!
This research starts off by saying the endocannabinoid system (ECS) can be manipulated to regulate nausea and vomiting in humans and other mammals. Research has already shown that CBD’s anti-emetic effect has been shown in animals that are capable of vomiting in response to a toxic challenge. Our body is full of two known receptors for cannabinoids – CB1 and CB2. CB1 agonism suppresses vomiting, which is reversed by CB1 antagonism. CB1 inverse agonism promotes vomiting.
“Recently, evidence from animal experiments suggests that cannabinoids may be especially useful in treating the more difficult to control symptoms of nausea and anticipatory nausea in chemotherapy patients, which are less well controlled by the currently available conventional pharmaceutical agents.“
CBD was also shown to suppress nausea and vomiting within a limited dose range, and may be mediated by indirect activation of receptors in the dorsal raphe nucleus. The study concluded by saying that CBD may also be effective clinically for treating both nausea and vomiting produced by chemotherapy and other treatments.
A second study by the National Institutes of health shows that again, CBD may be used to regulate nausea and vomiting by cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system. The study says:
“With the discovery of the endocannabinoid system, novel ways to regulate both nausea and vomiting have been discovered that involve the production of endogenous cannabinoids acting centrally.”
Most of these studies are on a small scale, and are anecdotal. Nonetheless, the research is growing every year – and most of it strongly supports the theory that CBD could be used to help regulate nausea and vomiting.
