Last week, we started talking about ten albums to listen to when you’re baked out of your mind. I hadn’t planned to split it up into two parts, but if I hadn’t then this article would have ended up being over 1000 words long, and I doubt many people have the attention span for that. So, now without further ado: the last half of this list.
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars-Ziggy Stardust aka David Bowie
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust is one of the most essential rock and roll albums of all time. It’s a great album to introduce friends to the magic that is David Bowie, or just rock and roll in general. As it so happens, this is a great album to listen to while baked out of your mind. Bowie is at his most poetic here, not to mention his most eccentric
Key Tracks: Moonage Daydream, Starman, Rock and Roll Suicide
Big Lizard in My Backyard- The Dead Milkmen
This classic album by Philly punks the Dead Milkmen might throw some people for a loop, but this band manages to be a lot of fun, while still singing about subject matter like politics, living in suburbia, and of course spoiled rich kids being bought cars by their parents. They manage to do it all without sounding angry and harshing your mellow. If you’re looking for something new to listen to. I can’t recommend these guys enough.
Key Tracks: Big Lizard in My Backyard, Right Wing Pigeons, Bitchin’ Camaro
White Pony- The Deftones
In my younger days I went through a huge metal phase, all metal all the time. Then I grew bored with it and began listening to other genres of music. There’s only one metal band that I still listen to regularly, and that is the Deftones. The album that I always put on is the classic White Pony. The psychedelic guitar work of Stephen Carpenter mixed with the haunting, yet beautiful lyrics of singer Chino Moreno make this album one of the most chill, yet powerful metal albums of all time.
Key Tracks: RX Queen, Passenger, Knife Party
Unplugged- Eric Clapton
Honestly any album by Eric Clapton is good, because Eric Clapton is a guitar god, but his Unplugged album really showcases his talents. I’m normally not a huge fan of unplugged albums in general, but I will always make an exception in Eric Clapton’s case. This album contains some of Clapton’s best work in my opinion, and sometimes you really can’t beat the sound of a raw, acoustic guitar.
Key Tracks: Hey Hey, Tears in Heaven, Layla
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots- The Flaming Lips
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is truly a work of art. Pretty much anything the Flaming Lips do is, but this album really stands out. No matter what matter of illicit substance you might be ingesting, listening to this album is a must. Last time I really listened to it all the way through, I was more than just high on a little reefer, if you get my drift. I’m fairly certain that just hearing singer Wayne Coyne’s voice causes hallucinations.
Key Tracks: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (parts 1 and 2), Fight Test, Do You Realize?
