CBD As A Treatment For Schizophrenia

A study in December of 2017 was published by PubMed discussing how effective CBD might be for those suffering from Schizophrenia. The study was done in both animals and humans and indicates that CBD has antipsychotic properties. This is important because not many studies have involved humans.

So, exactly how did they do this? In a double-blind parallel-group trial, “patients with schizophrenia were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive CBD (1000 mg/day; N=43) or placebo (N=45) alongside their existing antipsychotic medication. Participants were assessed before and after treatment using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS), the Global Assessment of Functioning scale (GAF), and the improvement and severity scales of the Clinical Global Impressions Scale (CGI-I and CGI-S).”

The results? After 6 weeks of treatment, the CBD group had far lower levels of psychotic symptoms than the placebo group. They were more likely to be rated as improved, and not as severely unwell by the treating clinician. Additionally, although it was not of statistical significance, the patients receiving CBD also showed greater improvement in cognitive performance and functioning than those receiving the placebo.

One of the best reports from this finding were on the side effects. It is stated that “CBD was well tolerated, and rates of adverse events were similar between the CBD and placebo groups.”

The study concluded by saying that these findings suggest benefits for patients with schizophrenia. CBD’s effects do not appear to depend on dopamine receptor antagonism – which means CBD probably represents an entirely new class of treatment for the disorder.

As more studies emerge, it becomes more and more clear that CBD may be the future of medicine. Although this is anecdotal evidence, it suggests that CBD may be an effective treatment for schizophrenia, with no side effects, and in a way no current medications work. That’s pretty exciting!!
