You’ve just finished smoking a fat bowl, or maybe taking a couple dabs, and now it’s time to pick out some tunes. With so many good options out there, how is one supposed to know what to pick? The following are in my opinion, the top ten albums that any stoner should listen to when they are baked out of their mind.
10. In Utero- Nirvana
Nirvana’s last album is definitely one of their best. I know when someone thinks of good music to chill and be baked out of your mind to, the heavy grunge stylings of Nirvana are probably not what comes to mind. Trust me on this one. Kurt Cobain’s powerful buzzsaw guitar during the opening chords of the first track “Serve the Servants” will immediately draw you in. By the time you reach “All Apologies” at the album’s close, you will be feeling nice and chill as you sing along with the lyrics “all alone is all we are.” You’ll be feeling anything but alone.
Key Tracks: Dumb, Heart Shaped Box, All Apologies
9. El Camino-The Black Keys
Again, the Black Keys are not typically what someone might think of when they think of “stoner music.” Hence why I included the band and this particular album on this list. The classic blues guitar of Dan Auerbach on “Gold on the Ceiling” will make you want to get up and groove. Patrick Carney’s classic drum beats will definitely give you something to dance to.
Key Tracks: Gold on the Ceiling, Lonely Boy, Sister
8. Confrontation-Bob Marley and the Wailers
Now we’re getting into the really good stuff. When people think of good, classic music to listen to while baked out of your mind, they of course think of Bob Marley. Confrontation is just one of many fantastic albums by Bob Marley and the Wailers. As far as reggae albums go, Confrontation is one of the best. Of course, you probably knew as soon as I brought up this album that I was going to bring up “Buffalo Soldier.” Yeah, you’re right. If you lie on your back and smoke a joint while listening to this track, you’ll swear that you can see your walls dance.
Key Tracks: Buffalo Soldier, Blackman Redemption, Trenchtown
7. Tell Me I’m Pretty-Cage the Elephant
And now for something completely different. Granted, Cage the Elephant haven’t been around as long and aren’t as ubiquitous as Bob Marley, but they are a great band to rock out to and listen to while baked out of your mind. Vocalist and frontman Matt Schultz said that their fourth release was meant to be different from their other albums. “With this record, we wanted to be more transparent. We wanted to capture the sentiment of each song, and whatever emotional response it provoked, to be really honest to that,” he said. The album was also priduced by DAn Auerbach of the above mentioned Black Eyed Keys, so that should be enough of an endorsement right there.
Key Tracks: Trouble, Too Late to Say Goodbye, Punching Bag
6. Heartache City- CocoRosie
If you’ve never heard CocoRosie, stop what you are doing and listen to them right now. You will not regret it. They are one of the trippiest bands that you will ever hear. They are a perfect accompaniment to a bong bowl. Heartache City is their sixth studio album, which they found much of the inspiration for in their farm studio, located in the South of France, where they played around with antique instruments and toys.
Key Tracks: Lost Girls, Un Beso, Heartache City
Stay Tuned for Part 2!
