Next year holds much significance for Mexicans cannabis advocates because the country is allowing the imports and sales of different medical cannabis products. Mexico’s health regulator announced about this development few days ago. The first batch of medicinal cannabis-based products is expected to go on shelves within a couple of months.
A verdict from the Supreme Court in 2015 paved the way for the legalization of medical cannabis. However, it takes nearly two years for the administration to authorize legalization when the President of Mexico signed the bill for the legalization of MMJ. This bill became part of legislation in June 2017 after getting raging support from the country’s lower house of congress.
Enrique Pena, the President of Mexico, issued an order that directed The Ministry of Heath to outline and implement the rules and regulations for the therapeutic uses of different scientific derivatives of multiple strains of cannabis. The department was also tasked to formulate policies on the course of research on different marijuana derivatives and nationwide cultivation, manufacturing and packaging of these products. This week’s announcement by cannabis regulators is the first initiative highlighting that the Department of Health is acting on the presidential decree by implementing policies that will make medical marijuana accessible to the patients.

According to a news report filed by Reuters, Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (Cofepris), a regulatory body of the ministry of health is going to furnish regulations and guidelines for imported marijuana products by the end of this month.
This step will enable Mexican patients to have marijuana based products as early as January 2018. According to the representative of Cofepris, they are expecting cannabis related businesses (distributors, medical dispensaries) to acquire marijuana products from overseas. Similarly, Mexican companies might also produce cannabis-infused products at domestic level by using marijuana strains cultivated in other countries.
This measure is definitely going to have beneficial impact on people dealing in cannabis related ventures. It is important to note that the regulations will not be exercised on the sales of pure cannabis.

Even though Cofepris haven’t categorically mentioned any exporter country to get MMJ products from, but it seems like the first source nation for cannabis-infused products would be Canada. In 2016, MMJ producers in Canada got government’s license to begin the exports of their products.
One of the first importing countries of Canadian cannabis-infused products included New Zealand, Croatia, Australia, Brazil, Germany and Chile. There are strong chances that supply chain from Toronto to Tijuana will be established in coming days.
Legalization of adult-use marijuana is still out of the question. There are very bleak chances that the country’s legislator is going to work to get recreational marijuana legalized. Two years ago, in an unprecedented case, the Supreme Court allowed four individuals to cultivate their own cannabis for personal consumption (for therapeutic reasons). This verdict helped in making the road towards legalization of medical marijuana less bumpy.
