Growing Unknown Bag Seeds

Growing Unknown Bag Seeds

Have you ever cultivated bag seeds before? When growing cannabis seeds of an unknown strain, the best approach is to avoid the common mistakes made by newbie cannabis growers.

When designing your grow space, consider the amount of room the plants will take up as well as the lights, ducts, fans, and other equipment. Never forget to leave enough room for you to move and work. Provide adequate head space because cannabis plants can double and triple in size during the early flowering stage. Keep a sanitized grow space. Cleanliness is a must in growing indoors.

Use standard lights preferably HID or high intensity discharge bulbs. These bulbs produce more light per unit of electricity used. The quality of light in the grow room will be the most important environmental factor in the quality and quantity of buds. Choose the best lighting setup your finances can allow.

Give marijuana fresh air to survive and thrive. Provide a steady stream of air flowing through the grow room. This can be achieved by installing an exhaust fan near the top to take out warm air, and the addition of a filtered air inlet on the opposite side near the floor.

Choose a cool, dry area with access to fresh air from the outdoors. This is done to prevent cannabis from developing problems secondary to temperature and humidity problems.

Decide on a reliable grow medium. Every grow medium – whether soil, or rockwool slab in a hydroponics system – has its pros and cons. Soil is a traditional, forgiving medium which is a good choice for novice cannabis growers.

Choose high quality soil which doesn’t contain artificial fertilizers. Some growers also turn to soilless media for faster nutrient intake and bigger yields.

And finally, feed cannabis with the nutrients appropriate for its age. Cannabis plants produce high quality flowers when they receive the appropriate amounts of the following nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Now that you know the basic guidelines in cultivating cannabis in general, this grow journal will guide you through the process of cultivating unknown cannabis seeds.

This grow journal starts with two unknown bag seeds. The other details are as follows:

  • Medium – Soil in pots
  • Tent – Vivosun 2 x 4 x 5 tent
  • Lights – 300W LED
  • Ventilation system – 4-inch inline fan connected to carbon filter recirculating within tent plus 6-inch clip on fans to push air around and over plants Ventilation system Ventilation system Ventilation system

The two seeds were soaked in regular tap water for 48 hours. Afterwards, both have cracked and one had a small root poking through. They were then moved to a moist paper towel with a little plastic bag over them and set on top of the fridge.

They stayed in the moist paper towel for 24 more hours.  This sped up the growth of the tap root a little bit more. Finally, they were transferred into a small container with Fox Farms Happy Frog potting soil with some perlite mixed in for aeration.

Here are unknown seeds #1 and #2 respectively.

Here’s a set of photos in chronological order. They should show you the progress from seedling phase to the current state.

This is a photo from Week 1 (March 11th to 17th)

And this is a photo from Week 2 (March 18th to 24th)

The plants are housed 24/7 in the grow tent and they have been on an 18/6 light cycle since the start of week #2. Runoff on both plants came out between pH 6.3 and 6.5. Started adding CalMag at ¼ strength and pH 6.0 water to be proactive against deficiencies.

Tent temperature fluctuates between 79 and 83 degrees F.

Implemented some changes on the grow tent. Mounter the carbon filter inside the tent and sucking air through the inline fan that now sits outside the tent. Temperatures are now solidly between 79 and 81 degrees F with both lights on. This setup has also helped to keep the room humidity between 43% and 45%.

This week was also transplanting week and both plants are now sitting in their 3-gallon smart pots. Here are the two plans followed by a close up shot of some yellowing on unknown plant #1.

April 7th

It’s been a week since both unknown plants were transplanted into the 3-gallon smart pots. They’re not showing any signs of stress and are doing pretty well. They both had 5 decent nodes by April 5th and both were topped. Will be using a SCROG net and LST to try fill out the small 4 x 2 grow space.

These are photos of unknown #1 before and after topping.

And these are pictures of unknown #2.

As you can see, both of them are recovering nicely since being topped. They’re also starting to smell.

April 13th

It’s day 34 and the plants are doing well but they’re showing possible mite infestation. Some deformed leaves started showing on plant #1 and after a while, holes and bite marks showing up on plant #2 too.

Applied the bug blaster that came with the seeds to help solve the issue.

To trim or not to trim? Here’s this bushy little thing. The concern is how dense the leaves have become. They’re post LST but maybe it’s the right time to start trimming before hitting the SCROG net.
