The grow medium is one of the most important factors which contribute to marijuana growth. There are plenty of grow media which can work well for marijuana plants.
Soil is the classic option for most growers especially novices. It’s popular because it’s easy to find, and easy to use. Regular soil also allows plenty of room for learning for the inexperienced grower. When something goes wrong, the soil gives plants some sort of cushion.
The best soil type is sterilized potting compost. This grow medium allows cannabis to receive plenty of nutrients from the start.
Rockwool is also effective and useful. It’s available to growers in cubes of various sizes. Rockwool grow medium is made of mineral fiber. It’s a popular choice among hydroponics growers because of its breathability.
Perlite is another popular grow medium. If you haven’t seen it before, perlite looks like the small rocks that sit at the bottom of a fish tank. It’s actually volcanic gas in granule form. Perlite retains water really well and encourages oxygen to reach marijuana plants’ roots.
Vermiculite is a light medium that allows oxygen access and water retention. It doesn’t offer much support for marijuana plants and their roots so it needs to be combined with another type of medium.
Some advanced marijuana growers mix conventional grow medium to produce their own exclusive grow medium. This grow journal documents cultivating Girl Scout Cookies and Afghan Skunk using the grower’s own grow medium mix.

The process starts with the following supplies and equipment:
- 4 x 4 Gorilla grow tent
- 1 x Solis Tek 1000W air-cooled double ended light hood
- 1 x virtual sun 1000W HPS/MH digital ballast
- 1 x Hortilux Super HPS 1000W bulb
- 1 x iPower 1000W MH bulb
- 2 x VenTech inline blower fan with variable speed controller with charcoal filter, hood cooling, ducting, etc.
- 3 x 12” hanging fans
- 1 x Frigidaire dehumidifier
- Grow medium – 1 bag agricultural lime, 1 bag Geolite clay pebbles, 4 x 5 gallon plastic grow containers
- Seeds – 2 x Girl Scout Cookies, and 2 x Afghan Skunk
Hit the medium with agricultural lime then added an inch or so of the Geolite clay pebbles. Soaked the pots with 6.0 pH-ed water by about a gallon per pot. They will set for a week to adjust the medium pH. If the pH is good on the runoff it will be time to drop the seeds.
September 25th
Today, soaked the 4 pots with pH-ed water at 6.o and the runoff came out at a perfect 6.0. Today, was the day when the 2 Girl Scout Cookies and 2 Afghan Skunk seeds were dropped into them.
The pots were then covered with plastic wrap around the top. Just waiting and hoping all of them will pop up in the next few days.

Got up this morning and saw 1 GSC popped out of the soil. After she sprouted, the plastic wrap was removed to let her breathe. Hoping the others will break ground soon.

It’s officially Day 1 for these lovely babies. Had to hit them with a dose of plain pH 6.0 water. Heat has been running at a good 75 degrees F and humidity is around 55%. Here are a few photos of GSC 1 (left) and 2 (right).
And here are a couple photos of Afghan Skunk 1 and 2.

Been hitting the girls with 2 tablespoons of Big Bloom when watering with turkey baster around the plants. They’re off to a good start and seem to be happy so far.

Started the 6-hour ponytailing of the Afghan Skunk this evening for the lower nodes to receive more light. Will do this every day until they get some bottom growth. They’re already showing signs that they will be big, bushy girls!
And here’s a photo of them with the GSC. Even at this distance there’s a stark difference between the heights of the two strains.
October 16th
It’s Day 13 for the girls! All the plants underwent ponytailing by now and they are doing fine with it. Fimmed both Afghan Skunk plants and the GSC will undergo this process once they’re ready too. After they heal from the fim, they will be ponytailed again.
Upped the nutes to 3 tablespoons per gallon f Fox Farms Big Bloom.

Topped the girls and did some tucking of the fan leaves. Been hitting them with 3 tablespoons per gallon of Fox Farms Bog Bloom with water at pH 6.5. It seems like they’re growing every time the grow tent is opened.
