This Michigan College is Offering a Degree in Growing Cannabis

Have you always wanted to take a college course on growing, but have never been able to? Of course you’ve never been able to because there’s never been such a course offered. That’s all about to change. Starting next year, Northern Michigan University is offering a degree called “Medicinal Plant Chemistry”, CNBC reports.

Brandon Canfield, associate professor of analytical chemistry at Northern Michigan University who started the program, said in an interview with CNBC, “All of our graduates are going to be qualified to be analysts in a lab setting.” He went on to add that a position at one of these labs could potentially start at an annual salary as high as 70k. That could net you a pretty comfortable lifestyle.

There’s Just One Catch…

Before you run off and apply to Northern Michigan U, there’s something you should know. This program is incredibly difficult to make it through. First of all, you would not be doing any actual growing. Canfield says that this is the first question he’s always asked by students hoping to enter his program. Alex Roth, a sophomore who is enrolled in the program, says that his major is “not as simple as it sounds.” When people think of pursuing a major in marijuana studies, they are picturing something much more laid back than what this degree entails.  Roth says he’s taking classes like 400 level Gas and Liquid Chromatography.  It’s safe to say that this degree is for serious scholars only.

The program also offers a business track for “aspiring entrepreneurs”, which offers various business courses and courses on financial management. This particular track aims to teach students everything they need to know to be successful in the growing industry.

Canfield said that he got the idea for putting together the program, after he watched a panel done by the cannabis chemistry division at an even by the American Chemistry Society last year. “One of the recurring themes involved the lack of preparedness or the lack of competency in a lot of the existing analytical labs,” he said. “The speakers were expressing a great need for increased skilled laboratory technicians, analysts and oversight.”

This is an excellent point he brings up. For obvious reasons, the average botany or chemistry degree isn’t going to prepare you adequately for working in a lab where you’re doing something like testing for purity in cannabis strains.

Here’s Another Alternative

Of course, this degree is only being offered at Northern Michigan University, and unless you want to relocate to Michigan, you’re not going to be able to take it. If you don’t have the time or energy to dedicate to an incredible difficult degree, you’re just going to be miserable and deeply in debt. If you’re looking to become a master grower and don’t want to end up in five figures of debt, you can simply download one of our growing guides by going here.
