Peru Legalizes the Medical Use of Cannabis Oil

October 24,2017 Peru

In astonishing turn of events, Peru’s orthodox Congress ratified a bill to legalize medical marijuana in previous week following the protests of Peruvian cannabis advocates. Voting on the bill was one-sided with 68-5 favoring permitting cannabis oil to be extracted and commercialized.

Role of Two Peruvian Mothers

The ratification of this bill is the culmination of the momentum which was started by Peruvian mothers wanted the right to use medical marijuana for its therapeutic benefits.

For example, Ana Alvarez living in Lima with his four children has transformed a part her house into medical marijuana laboratory. Now many patients come to her and she prescribes them different medical cannabis derivatives to alleviate their debilitating health state. Alvarez’s house has converted into an informal marijuana dispensary.

Alvarez’s this journey was started when she was trying to find cure for her son’s chronic seizure condition. Marijuana was the only substance that proved to be effective in stopping the seizures. Afterwards, she started to help others with healing benefits of marijuana.

Ana detailed the change that occur in his family life with the use of medical marijuana, “After three days of taking marijuana oil, Anthony started to reconnect with life, he began to socialize, he began to sleep, he began to eat and little by little he started to recover. The change after three days was something extraordinary and from that moment my fight began.”

Ana shared the vision with another mother, Dorothy Santiago, who was also in her shoes. Santiago’s own son was suffering from seizures. Both of the mothers decided to establish a support group Buscando Esperanza meaning “Searching for Hope”. It advocates and campaigns for the use of medical cannabis. Now more than 200 members are affiliated with the group.

Buscando Esperanza along with other advocates of medical use of cannabis protested to legalize medical marijuana. They protested outside the office of ministry of interior in the capital in the beginning of the year. The protest’s message was “give me back my medicine, do not let me die”.

In February police raided Alvarez’s flat, which is used as Buscando Esperanza’s medical marijuana lab. Following the raid, Peruvian government had to come with the proposition to legalize cannabis for medical uses. The proposed legislation was passed in support of cannabis oil to be extracted and marketed for medicinal uses. However, use of cannabis flower will remain illegal in Peru. According to ruling party’s legislative members, Alberto Belaunde, rules and regulations for medical use cannabis oil will be set in next two months. Belaunde said that this development would bring hope for many patients and their families and will ensure a healthier life for them.

Peru is surrounded by countries that are already progressive in this regard. For instance, its bordering countries such as Colombia and Chile have already allowed the medical uses of marijuana. Uruguay is the most cannabis-liberal country of the region because it has fully allowed the cultivation and distribution of adult-use cannabis.
