CBD Shows Anxiolytic Effect - CBD for Stress & Anxiety

Research on Cannabidiol (CBD) is showing that cannabinoids may benefit and help people who suffer the negative health effects from chronic stress and anxiety. Anxiety is one of America’s most widespread health concerns. Approximately 75% of people with mental disorders who attempt suicide are diagnosed with anxiety disorders. Anxiety has also been said to effect over 90% of American’s annually. So, can CBD really have that much of an impact on those struggling with anxiety?

A study from the National Institutes of Health claims that, “Studies using animal models of anxiety and involving healthy volunteers clearly suggest an anxiolytic-like effect of CBD. Moreover, CBD was shown to reduce anxiety in patients with social anxiety disorder.” However, the study did conclude that it is not known how CBD did this, and its action remains to be determined.

That was in 2012. Just one year later it as shown in a study that “repeated administration of CBD increased hippocampal progenitor proliferation and neurogenesis in wild-type mice.” CBD also prevented the anxiogenic effect of chronic unpredictable stress. It was shown that the CB1 cannabinoid receptor was involved in this action. It then stated that:

Studies conducted with hippocampal progenitor cells in culture showed that CBD promotes progenitor proliferation and cell cycle progression and mimics the proliferative effect of CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptor activation. Moreover, antagonists of these two receptors or endocannabinoid depletion by fatty acid amide hydrolase overexpression prevented CBD-induced cell proliferation. These findings support that the anxiolytic effect of chronic CBD administration in stressed mice depends on its proneurogenic action in the adult hippocampus by facilitating endocannabinoid-mediated signaling.

It is amazing how far research has come, and how quickly it is growing. In just one year, more and more details were found as to why CBD can help those struggling with anxiety. Since then, many more studies have shown more evidence as to how CBD can alleviate stress and anxiety.
