An Old Man’s Cannabis Grow

An Old Man’s Cannabis Grow

Growing marijuana is a skill. As with any skill, practice and consistency are needed to be successful and be in the top tier. But what happens when an old grower returns from years without practice? Luckily, the internet is filled with informative webpages and forums about growing marijuana.

This grow journal features the man’s return to growing marijuana with the Tranwreck strain.

The Trainwreck cannabis strain is one of the finest and strongest marijuana you can find anywhere. It has a euphoric effect which makes it ideal for alleviating stress and depression.

Among different cannabis strains, the Trainwreck is one of the easier varieties to grow but room management might be an issue because it can easily grow taller than 2 meters. It also yields between 250 to 500 grams per square meter of weed. A typical grow will last 7 to 9 weeks in flowering period.

February 27th

This grow journal starts out with the following:

  • Seeds – Trainwreck autoflowers
  • Grow medium – Pro Mix
  • Pots – 3-gallon pots
  • Lights – CFL
  • Nutes – None for now
  • Grow Tent – Small, 2x 2 (L x W)

The seeds were germinated and planted. Here are some photos one week after the plants sprouted from the ground.

Here are photos on their 2nd week of growth and their progress is extremely pleasing. Both have been topped and seem to have tolerated the process. Later this week, they’d be trained to even up the canopy.

21 days in and things seem to be doing ok. A small LED light, specifically a Mars reflector 48) was added to the setup.

Here they are at Day 27. They are in pre-flower. They look healthy and are growing quickly too. You can tell they are in pre-flowers because of the little version of adult flowers appearing on them. Pre-flowers are also a great way to determine a plant’s sex. So far, it seems these two are females.

Day 27 Day 27

March 27th

Both plants seem to be growing half an inch per day. The bottom leaves are turning yellow so they may need to have their pH checked in a couple of days. Other than that, they’re doing awesomely.

At this point, they’re being watered every 4 or 5 days.

Day 49 and the buds are starting to fill out. Their great smell has become more noticeable. One plant is more compact than the other but the buds are bigger. Unfortunately, they may have been stunted a bit because the water pH was not regulated. The regular tap water is about pH 7.5.

They’re probably only 3 to 4 weeks away from harvest and the bud are slowly fattening up. While it might not be a large amounts, it’s more important not to do any permanent damage to them in the remaining time.

The filter works perfectly in controlling the smell and keeping this grow in stealth mode. Whenever they’re taken out of the tent, they stink the whole place up. They also have an odd, lemony smell. It’s not unpleasant but it’s just very strong.

And here’s some bud porn for your viewing pleasure. These photos aren’t that great under LED. You can see how different both plants are in these photos. One is bushier and the other has more compact leaves.

April 22nd

Day 61 and the pistils are starting to turn orange. It should be harvest time soon. Due to being one day apart, one seems more advanced than the other. It would be interesting to experience if their effects have any difference.

While the results of this grow are quite pleasing, there are some changes which need to happen for the next grow such as improved lighting, and better nutes.

better nutes better nutes

Once the buds start turning amber, that’s a sign they’re almost ready to harvest. They should undergo some serious flush without the nutes soon.

May 11th

Day 80. All the fan leaves have died off as the plants channel their energies into the buds. The trichomes are also cloudy enough so both plants were finally cut down this morning. So far, the shorter plant has bigger buds.

Day 80 Day 80

May 18th

The buds were dried in the tent for several days and now, they’re inside mason jars and everything looks good. Molds were almost a concern but everything worked out and the results was 42 grams of really good, really smooth smoke. This much is enough to last a light smoker for a year at least. On top of that, growing your own weed is better than buying because you know what you’re getting.

All that aside, a next grow needs to be started soon because this is such a great pastime. However, there are still so many variables to consider and manipulate.

The grower talked about the factors which needed to be improved for future grows. To create the best growing environment, there are at least 4 factors you need to consider.

First is the light. Cannabis needs bright light but not too bright. The amount and intensity of light you have can is a major factor that will determine your yields. Smaller lights mean smaller yields.

Temperature is the second factor. A good rule of thumb is if it’s not comfortable for you, then it’s not comfortable for the plants either. Cannabis prefer temperatures ranging from 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Air circulation is also important. This will help plants grow faster and prevent molds and common cannabis pests like fungus gnats and spider mites. Having one or two oscillating fans should be sufficient for cannabis.

And finally, humidity will help get faster growth and more resin into your buds. During the veg phase, humidity should be 40% to 70%. During flowering, this range becomes narrower and the recommended humidity is 40% to 50%. Durin
