Sour Diesel and Bubba Kush for Newbie Grower

Sour Diesel and Bubba Kush for Newbie Grower

When it comes to growing two different strains together, few can be as challenging as cultivating the Sour Diesel and Bubba Kush at the same time.

Sour Diesel is a legendary strain on the East Coast which gained popularity due to its unique, pungent, diesel aroma. The high it produces is cerebral and energizing. Meanwhile, the Bubba Kush is known for its potency that’s guaranteed to knock you out. It delivers flavors of chocolate and coffee which will leave you at peace.

It’s nice to have two potent strains in your inventory. However, growing these two strains together is quite challenging.

Sour Diesel is known to grow tall and lanky. It will stretch multiple times even during flower. Sour Diesel requires pruning, training, and topping to keep it from getting out of control. Meanwhile, Bubba Kush is a strain that stays short, and dense. While space and stretching might be an issue, you can easily synchronize their feeding because they’re both heavy feeders all the way through the flowering cycle.

This grow journal takes a look at growing these two strains together.

Yield: 1 pound (half of plants only)

March 8th

Starting out with the following supplies:

  • Strain – 3 Sour Diesels, and 3 Bubba Kush
  • Lights – 2 T5 Sunblaze 46’s for veg (18/6 light cycle) and 2 600W HPS for flower (12/12 light cycle)
  • Tent – 4ft. x 4ft. x 7ft.
  • Soil – Aurora (Soul)

This grow started with the Sour Diesel seeds in Rockwool. As soon as they sprouted, they were transferred to Dixie cups in a dome under a T5 light on the 18/6 light cycle. When they hit 5 inches, they were transferred to 5-gallon buckets about 3 inches away from the T5 lights.

When they grew 10 to 12 inches, the tops were tied down to the side of the buckets and they have been topped once. The fan leaves were also bent down to help with the light.

Just added the 3 Bubba Kush in tonight and they are about 4 or 5 inches. They will undergo the same process as the Sour Diesels.

Naturally, the Sour Diesels are larger than the Bubba Kush at this point.

Check out the photos below.

Over the last three days, some of the leaves of are starting to show yellowing tips that are spreading towards the center.

It may be due to the water and soil pH although this was never a problem before. Some pH-ed water will run through them tomorrow evening.

Despite what’s happening, more plants will be added to the grow area: Lemon Skunk, Great White Shark and LA Confidential.

Here are new pics of the grow tent.

It’s getting a little crowded. All seems to be good now. The yellowing leaves seem to be controlled by a light rinsing.

March 22nd

The Sour Diesel is ready to be flipped to flower but there isn’t any room for it yet in the bloom tent.

The plants are starting to grow taller and if no interventions happen now, they might spiral out of control. Here are the Sour Diesel and the Bubba Kush in a SCROG. This should control the height of the plant and train them to grow colas in neat rows.
