Growing Thai Stick under CFL and LED Lights

Growing Thai Stick under CFL and LED Lights

Thai Stick is a rare 100% sativa strain. Its name comes from its country of origin – Thailand – and the unique way of smoking it. Its buds are typically skewered on long thin bamboo sticks, and dipped into hash oil for added strength.

Despite its unique smoking method, it does have an indica-like high, infusing the body with a growing sense of euphoria that leaves you uplifted and motivated. It has a 15-20% THC content which makes it an ideal strain for treating fatigue, depression, loss of appetite, and stress.

Growing this strain, or any other strains under CFLs and LEDs will provide different effects.

CFLs or Compact Fluorescent Lamps are used by growers because they cover the full visible light spectrum which make them a visible alternative for normal daylight. Meanwhile, LED also produce visible light but very efficiently from lo electricity.

This grow journal records the effects of combining these two light sources in growing the Thai stick marijuana strain.

The following supplies were used at the start of this grow:

  • Soil – Black Magic potting mix with 30% MG perlite
  • Lights – 4 x 42W CFLs 2700 at 2650 lumens each; 3 x 40W CFLs 2700 at 2750 lumens each; 2x 45W red and blue spectrum LED panels at 9000 lumens each
  • Customized grow cabinet with a 3ft. x 4ft. base with 2-inch reflective rigid foam insulation around the edges

The four seeds all cracked around December 12th and were transferred into Jiffy pellets on December 19th. They are under one of the LED panels in a temperature controlled box at 72 degrees just to get them established.

For now, they aren’t receiving any nutes but the General Organics Go Box will be used when the time comes.

So far, this DIY set up has totaled to just about $150 but upgrades are bound to happen at some point.

This photo shows how easy it is to make a cheap CFL reflector.

Here’s the fully-erected grow cabinet. It’s real stuffy under the house so some air needs to be funneled from the outside and into the grow cabinet. It shouldn’t be hard.

The plants were also FIM-ed for the first time. The grow cabinet should finish tomorrow and maybe the lights.

The grow cabinet is finally complete. Initial temperatures were sitting at 61 degrees Fahrenheit but it’s bound to go up because of a small 40W heater. Inside is a fan that stirs just enough of the air to give it a tiny breeze. Initial humidity is 65%.

All girls were transplanted to 3-gallon fabric pots and given half strength General Organics for the first time. They were drooping just a bit after transplant. They should perk back up after being sprinkled with Mycos on the roots and in the hole where they were transplanted.

Unfortunately, the plants suffered a misstep. After the transplant, they were overwatered. It wasn’t long before they stopped growing and drooped. They were in this state for over a week until the soil dried out.

Here are plants now 10 days after. They have somewhat bounced back and have started growing again. Any future watering will be shaken up weal well to aerate it so the roots can get even more O2. A mixture of 1 liter of water with more GO nutes at half strength with 500 PPM was divided among all 4 plants.

Just a quick update. The plants looked great last night with lots of new light green growth. You can really tell when they respond to something. They seem to significantly grow up and grow out now that the water and nutes level are where they should be. You won’t see any droopy yellow leaves anymore.

They were watered with just enough plain water because they were pretty dry. It seems this strain likes light watering and light nutes.

Another 40W CFL was added to the setup. When screwing in the final CFL, the bulb dropped onto one of the plants. It was reattached with some duct tape.
