Chuck Rosenberg Resigns! Who Will Replace the DEA Head?

September 28,2017

According to the recent report from New York Times and Washington Post, Chuck Rosenberg—Head, Drug Enforcement Administration—has handed over his resignation. He will be letting go of his position by the week’s end. There have been several speculations about his departure. However, the Times has linked Rosenberg’s move with the growing concern about President Trump not respecting the law.

Chuck will be stepping down from his post by the 1st of October. He was among the very few who switched from the Obama Administration to Trump’s. Chuck Rosenberg has been part of the agency since 2015. He replaced the Administrator of DEA, Michelle Leonhart, who resigned as a consequence of mishandling a scandal. Leonhart also opposed Ex-President Obama for the way he, along with Eric Holder—Attorney General—dealt with the state-legal marijuana.

On the other hand, Rosenberg himself wasn’t the best person for cannabis-related matters. After all, it was him how called MMJ nothing more than a joke.

He was actually moved from being the Chief of Staff to James Comey—ex FBI Director. To James’ misfortune, he was among the many fired by the current President. Contrary to what was expected, this move by President Trump did not bring any benefit to the President-DEA relationship. In fact, things worsened between them over time, especially when Rosenberg rejected Trumps unnecessary orders to not be nice while dealing with the criminals. Chuck Rosenberg drafted an email to the employees of DEA where he refused to follow Trump’s orders. He wrote that it is their obligation that if they see something wrong being done, they speak out for it.

It was already established, however, that the soon ex-DEA wasn’t the biggest fan of cannabis. He once stated that marijuana may not be as lethal as heroin, but it surely isn’t a medicine. It was his comments like these back in 2015 that led several advocates of medical cannabis to demanding his resignation.

Chuck Rosenberg did not stop there. He kept speaking ill of the therapeutic drug at different occasions. Sometimes he would call medical marijuana a hoax and not therapeutic at all, other times he would debate about not calling cannabis a medicine. He said that it may not be dangerous or even bad, but calling it a medicine was going too far for him. In fact, he even denied every single bit of research proving the benefit of MMJ saying that the drug had “never been shown to be safe or effective as a medicine.”

President Trump hasn’t yet nominated a DEA-Head yet, and it has already been about a year into his term. Maybe if he stopped raging childish wars against countries, he would be able to give a little thought to what happens when the Head of the Drug Enforcement Administration leaves. His presence certainly didn’t make the White House take the important decision. Maybe his absence would put enough pressure for the President to look this way.

What makes matters worse is that the DEA falls under the Justice Department overseen by Jeff Sessions—Attorney General. Expectations cannot be kept high of him either.
