Looks Like Canada Will Have to Wait a Little Longer for Legalization

It looks as though Canada will have to wait a little bit longer for recreational cannabis legalization. Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau announced at a press conference this morning that he was postponing legalization until October 17th, to give Canadian provinces “more time to prepare for a smooth transition” once the new legal weed law goes into effect canada will only be the second country to legalize cannabis for recreational use. Uruguay was the first country to do so and began legally selling cannabis last year.

This isn't Necessarily a Bad Thing

While as a Canadian resident you’re probably a little disappointed that you’re not going to get to buy weed this summer as you originally thought, it’s important to note that this is not entirely a bad thing. Canada is taking on a lot by legalizing throughout the entire country. As you can imagine, getting a cannabis market ready requires a hell of a lot of preparation. There’s a reason why California didn’t begin their legal sales until the beginning of this year.

There are a lot of things to take into consideration. There’s not only the business licenses, the growers’ licenses and the rest of the supply side of things. There’s also all the different regulations that have to be put into place. Then, everyone even tangentially involved with the cannabis industry has to make sure that they are compliant.

This is why growers and business owners asked for the extra time. Just imagine what a disaster it would be if they were to open the market before it was ready? The rest of the world will be scrutinizing Canada. For obvious reasons, it is very important that this goes well.

So it looks as though Canada will have to wait a little longer for legal weed. That’s probably for the best, so we may as well be patient.
