Compliance Regulations are Upon California’s Marijuana Industry

June 27, 2018, California

These days every other cannabis store in California is offering worthwhile sales and consumers are swarming to the stores to score as much as they can. It is only natural on consumers’ part because 70 percent discounts are really something and no one would want to let them pass.

However, there is a reason why cannabis stores have become so accommodating to consumers all of a sudden. Until now, cannabis stores are selling their products without complying with the strict provisions that are part of actual cannabis legislation of the Golden State.

When legalized sales of cannabis started in California on the first day of this year, the state administration allowed the nascent industry to operate for six months under great leniency. During the grace period, it is not an obligation for legal cannabis business to comply with all the restrict provisions of testing, packaging, labeling etc.

The grace period is going to end on 30th June. This means from July 1st every legal cannabis venture of the state has to fully comply with all the rules and regulations of cannabis legislation. This is the reason why cannabis stores are having stock clearances of all the non-compliant products by offering extremely lucrative sales.

Strict Regulations Will be in Place

California’s Bureau of Cannabis Control has made it clear that no leniency will be rendered from July 1st. There are some noteworthy regulation provisions that will be in effect from the start of next month.

  • No cannabis store will be able to sell untested marijuana products
  • Retail cannabis stores will not be authorized to package and label any of the products they will offer
  • Non-edible recreational marijuana products can’t contain more than 1000 mg of THC
  • Non-edible medical marijuana products can’t contain more than 2000 mg THC

Additionally, cannabis stores will only allow selling products with tamper-proof packaging and prominent labels.

Restrictive Regulations Will Affect Small Ventures

According to experts analyzing the cannabis legalization of California from the beginning, the post 1st July era will bring difficulties for small-scale and individual business owners. They will need a momentous amount of resources and expertise to transform their operations to comply with the regulations.

Experts also fear that many small-scale businesses will eventually opt out of the cannabis industry. This means fewer products will be available for consumers. It will strengthen the monopoly of industry’s giants, resulting in hiked up prices of cannabis products.

While small cannabis ventures will have to suffer from strict provisions post 1st July, the compliance will help packaging and branding businesses to flourish further. It has been reported that marijuana-dedicated packaging businesses have experienced exponential growth in last few years.

Many cannabis businesses understand the importance of strict compliance in place. Ed Breslin owns a business that manufactures cannabinoid products. According to him, the compliance will reduce his profit margin, but he also considers it a necessity for the sustenance of legal cannabis industry.
